SUNTEC CONCRETE SUPPORTS VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL TRADE SKILLS COMPETITIONPosted: 04/23/10 Suntec Concrete was pleased to contribute to the development of our countries future work force, at the SkillsUSA competition, where 22 teams of 2 high school students from across the valley came together to test their carpentry skills. Each team was asked to build a wooden wishing well from construction drawings and a materials list that was to be 2 feet x 2 feet x 5 feet 3 inches, with a pitched roof. The teams used basic hand tools as well as miter chop saws to cut the lumber. The teams were judged on the overall craftsmanship of their wishing well, how accurate the dimensions were and how well they worked as a team. All of the teams were recognized for their valiant efforts, and able to keep their wells, but the winning team was awarded with Diamond Back baseball tickets and the pride of being the best carpenter in the competition.
SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers, high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. It was formerly known as VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America). The students at the completion were able to get involved in this organization and completion through their vocational classes at their high school. These students have shown an interest in pursuing the trades as a career after high school graduation. Suntec Concrete has happy to donate their expertise, time, and materials in this completion, and wishes all of the competitors the best in their future endeavors. |
